From its very beginning, the Offshore Yachting Club of Rhodes has been aimed at the dissemination of sailing on the island of Rhodes as well as education in its basic principles. Necessary for this was the establishment and operation of the Offshore Sailing School, which was done in 1988.
The courses lasts eight (8) weeks, and take place every year from October to December. Everyone over the age of 18 can participate on condition that they know swimming and hold a medical certification stating that they are healthy. To facilitate students who may work, lessons take place on Saturdays and Sundays
The provided license permits the skippers to rule a yacht up to 16 meters long.
To date, there have been 65 training series which have been attended by some 800 persons.
The theoretical lessons are taught in the Club’s facilities, in Zefiros, with modern equipment, whereas the practical ones are conducted on yachts, in the sea. The final practical test, before the exams, is a two-day trip to Symi, where the students have the opportunity to practice what they have been taught, to experience night sailing, to see the ship’s lights and signals during night.
Through these lessons, the new sailors have a first substantial contact with the sea and its secrets, while at the completion of the courses, and after being successfully tested, they receive a certificate of attendance. In order to obtain a sailing boat master’s diploma, international recognition must necessarily take part in at least one race organized by the Offshore Yachting Club of Rhodes in order to gain practical experience in real conditions.
